Tips from Robin Koenders
Dutch Paddler from the 2009 Quadracentennial Race
Race around New York, what a great experience it was! To see one of the greatest cities of the world from the kayak position is a really beautiful sight! But it wasn't only beautiful,it was one of my toughest races ever. When I signed up for the race, I expected it to be a race that would take me around 3.5 hours, but it took me almost 5 hours! It was a fight against almost all the elements, rain, waves, current and a lot of wind. The funny thing is, that Hell's gate, the so called toughest part of the race, was the easiest compared to the conditions on the Hudson. Especially the last mile on the Hudson was the longest mile in my life, because of the wind and the current. But in the end, when you complete the race it gives a amazing feeling you will keep your lifetime! My advice to you, do the race and experience and love every bit of it!
